5 Memorable Labor Day Locations
Updated: Jun 21, 2018
Labor Day is just over a month away but it is not too late to start planning an incredible end of the summer weekend. Whether you're planning for a family or a girls trip hopefully we can inspire some ideas.
Sonoma Valley, CA
If you’re a wine lover, does anything sound better than a weekend exploring the vineyards, where some of the finest wines come from? Didn’t think so. Over the past few years, Sonoma has become a hot spot for those who want to try a variety of wines selected for you by the experts in a spectacularly beautiful place. About an hour drive from the Oakland International Airport and the San Francisco International Airport, Sonoma is the perfect place wrap up your summer. Vineyard tours are a dime a dozen; you can tour by foot, bike, trolley, luxury vehicle, zip line...you name it, you can most likely do it! Here is a list of wine tours the area has to offer. This year, the Sonoma Wine Country Weekend is labor day weekend and it is highly recommended! Purchase a one or two day ticket to access food, wine, and a good time! Purchase your ticket as soon as you book your trip because the event usually sells out!
This is a great location for adults and children alike and the two-hour drive from Boston Logan is worth it. The Life Happens Outside Festival In Thompson's Point is a weekend of outdoor activities, music, food, and movies. Children under 5 enter for free and there is beer for the parents. Win, win! If you're a history buff and live for sightseeing, you might want to consider a visit to the Portland Observatory, the Victoria Mansion, and the Portland Headlight. Do not leave without having a lobster. Ask a local for the best restaurants or shacks for lobster or save some money and boil them yourselves! Lighthouses, delicious lobster, and coastal views are just a few of the attributes that create this quintessential New England experience. (Traffic will be terrible on the Friday and Monday of Labor Day weekend. Consider going Thursday to Tuesday to save yourself a headache.)
San Juan Islands, WA
The San Juan Islands are a 30-minute commercial flight and a quick ferry ride away from Sea-Tac. Whether you choose to stay on San Juan, Orcas, or Lopez Island, you will not go wrong. If you are attracted to the quiet and peaceful charm of farmland, try Lopez Island. There you can ride a bike to Lopez Village for lunch and shop. Orcas Island is perfect for those who live for the outdoors. There are winding roads to bike, trails to hike, and open water to kayak. San Juan Island has Friday Harbor, the most populated part of the San Juans. There's plenty to do there such as shop, visit museums, and whale watch. There is so much explore in the San Juan Islands that you will be booking a second trip for next Labor Day!
Lake Geneva, WI
Lake Geneva is a scenic and historic city that will surely satisfy. This location is particularly great for families as there is something for every member of the family. Walk the shore path for an up close look at the century old estates and constant breathtaking views. Feel daring? The Lake Geneva Canopy Tours provide a perspective of the city you can't get anywhere else! There are also plenty of spas for those who like to actually relax on their vaca. Lake Geneva is about a two-hour drive from MDW and ORD, so, if you have the time, you might as well spend an extra day or two exploring Chicago!
Not sure how one can fit even an iota of Dallas into one Labor Day weekend, but that is no reason to not visit. Dallas is a huge, eclectic city that is on the rise and attracting more and more people each year. You can get around and explore the city easily on the M-Line Trolley. Hit up the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden for an outdoor lunch and "Instagram-able" views. Take the kids to the Perot Museum to see the World's Largest Dinosaurs exhibit, only on display until September 1st! Dallas has so many options when it comes to bustling nightlife but try neighborhoods like Lower Greenville, Uptown, and Deep Ellum for starters. Book your plane ticket into Dallas Fort Worth and prepare yourself for an epic Labor Day weekend!
